Kenya and Tanzania are neighbours that share some of Africa's best wildlife, including the Great Migration. Both are excellent. So when Indian travellers ask which one to choose, the honest answer is: it depends on when you're going, how much time you have and what kind of trip you want.
This guide compares the two side by side so you can decide with confidence.
Quick Verdict
- Choose Kenya if it's your first safari, you're travelling in July to October, you have about a week, or you're travelling with family or seniors.
- Choose Tanzania if you want bigger, wilder parks, you're travelling between December and March, or you'd like to see the Ngorongoro Crater.
- Choose both if you have 10 days or more and want the best of East Africa in one trip.
Wildlife and the Great Migration
Both countries offer the Big Five and outstanding predator sightings. The difference lies in scale and timing.
Kenya's Masai Mara is compact, so wildlife is concentrated and sightings come quickly. It's one of the best places in Africa for big cats.
Tanzania's Serengeti is many times larger. It feels vast and remote, with long drives between sightings but also fewer vehicles in many areas.
The Great Migration moves between the two:
| Months | Best country for the migration |
| December–March | Tanzania (southern Serengeti, calving season) |
| April–June | Tanzania (central and western Serengeti) |
| July–October | Kenya (Masai Mara) or northern Tanzania |
| November | Herds moving south into Tanzania |
If you're travelling during Indian summer holidays or after the monsoon, Kenya is usually the better bet for migration viewing.
Parks Compared
Masai Mara vs Serengeti
| Factors | Masai Mara (Kenya) | Serengeti (Tanzania) |
| Size | Smaller and compact | Very large |
| Wildlife density | Very high | High, more spread out |
| Crowds | Can be busy in peak season | Quieter in many areas |
| Access | Short flights or road from Nairobi | Flights or long drives from Arusha |
| Migration | July–October | Most of the year |
Amboseli vs Ngorongoro Crater
- Amboseli (Kenya): Famous for large elephant herds with Kilimanjaro in the background. Open, flat and easy for game viewing.
- Ngorongoro Crater (Tanzania): A huge volcanic crater with dense wildlife inside, including black rhinos. It's a unique landscape you won't find in Kenya.
Kenya also offers Lake Nakuru and Lake Naivasha, while Tanzania has Tarangire, known for elephants and baobab trees, and Lake Manyara.
Flights and Connectivity from India
Kenya: Nairobi is well connected to India, with nonstop flights from Mumbai of around six hours. From Nairobi, the main parks are a short flight or a few hours' drive away.
Tanzania: There are flights from India to Dar es Salaam, but the northern safari circuit starts from Kilimanjaro Airport near Arusha. Most Indian travellers connect through Nairobi, Dar es Salaam, Addis Ababa or a Gulf hub, so the journey often takes longer.
For a short trip, Kenya's easier access saves valuable time.
Visa and Vaccine Rules
| Kenya | Tanzania | |
| Entry permit | eTA, applied for online before travel | Tanzania visa, usually applied for online |
| Yellow fever | Certificate needed to re-enter India | Usually not needed if flying direct from India, but needed if you've visited Kenya first |
If you're combining both countries, get the yellow fever vaccine before you leave India. Check the latest rules for both countries before you book.
Cost Comparison
Both destinations offer budget, mid-range and luxury options, but Tanzania's northern circuit generally costs a little more, for a few reasons:
- Longer distances between parks mean more driving days or more internal flights
- Park and concession fees in the Serengeti and Ngorongoro add up
- Longer itineraries are usually needed to cover the main parks
Kenya, on the other hand, has seen a sharp rise in Masai Mara park fees for foreign visitors in the July–December peak season. That narrows the gap during migration months.
In short: Kenya usually works out cheaper for a 6–7 day trip, while Tanzania suits travellers with more time and a bigger budget.
Beaches: Diani vs Zanzibar
Both countries have Indian Ocean beaches for a relaxing finish.
- Diani (Kenya): A long, peaceful white-sand beach with palm trees, good for pure relaxation. Easy to reach with a short domestic flight.
- Zanzibar (Tanzania): An island known for historic Stone Town, spice tours and turquoise water. More culture, more variety and a livelier feel.
Zanzibar is better known, but Diani is just as beautiful and often easier to add to a Kenya safari.
Combining Both Countries
If you have 10 to 14 days, you don't have to choose. A combined Kenya and Tanzania safari is one of the best trips in Africa.
A popular route:
- Nairobi (arrive and rest)
- Amboseli (elephants and Kilimanjaro)
- Cross into Tanzania for Ngorongoro Crater
- Serengeti (big plains and big cats)
- Fly back to Kenya for the Masai Mara
- Optional beach break in Zanzibar or Diani
Things to plan for:
- Entry permits for both countries
- A yellow fever certificate
- Border crossing time if travelling by road
- Light aircraft luggage limits, usually around 15 kg in soft bags
