Itinerary
Upon arrival, guests will be welcomed at the airport . Guest Experience Executive, who will serve as your tour guide and companion throughout your Bhutan journey. After a drive to your hotel in Thimphu, take some time to refresh and enjoy lunch (at own). Then, visit the following sites:
Kuensel Phodrang (Buddha Point): Home to the world’s largest sitting Buddha statue, standing at 167 feet tall. Perched atop a hill, the statue offers stunning views of Thimphu Valley on both sides. Located about 15 minutes from the city center, Kuensel means “everything is clear,” and the viewpoint provides breathtaking vistas of the city and valley.
Motithang Takin Preserve: Known by many as the Thimphu Zoo, this small natural preserve is dedicated to Bhutan’s national animal, the Takin. Originally a mini zoo, it was transformed into a preserve after the King of Bhutan decreed it was inappropriate for a Buddhist nation to keep animals in captivity.
Tashichho Dzong: In the evening, visit this historic Buddhist monastery and fortress located at the northern edge of Thimphu. Situated on the western bank of the Wang Chu River, the Dzong has served as the seat of Bhutan’s government and the residence of the Druk Desi, or Dharma Raja.
Overnight stay in Thimphu.
Activities Included –
Kuensel Phodrang (Buddha Point)
- Motithang Takin Preserve
- Tashichho Dzong
After breakfast, proceed for a full-day city tour covering the following attractions:
Jungshi Handmade Paper Factory: This private factory produces unique handcrafted paper with a special watermark, along with products such as lampshades, envelopes, and other items made from traditional Bhutanese paper. These handmade products, with their distinct earth tones and natural hues, make for wonderful and truly unique gifts.
Folk Heritage Museum: Opened to the public in 2001, this museum offers a deep dive into Bhutan’s rich culture and heritage. Housed in a replica of a traditional Bhutanese house, it provides insights into Bhutanese customs, traditions, and way of life. It’s best to visit in the morning when the museum is less crowded and bathed in natural light.
Memorial Chorten: Also known as Gongzo Chorten or Gyaldren Chorten, this sacred stupa is a significant landmark in Thimphu and a place of worship for the local people. It was envisioned by the Third King, His Majesty Jigme Dorji Wangchuck, as a means to ward off negative energies.
Changangkha Lhakhang: A 12th-century temple perched on a hill overlooking Thimphu Valley, Changangkha Lhakhang is home to the main statue of Chenrezig, the Buddha of Compassion. Often mistaken for a dzong due to its architecture, the temple also hosts a monastic school. It is a popular site for couples who seek blessings for their newborns.

City Tour
After breakfast, drive towards Punakha and make a stop at Do Chula Pass (3,100 m), where on clear days, you can enjoy breathtaking views of the Himalayan ranges. Do Chula Pass is one of the most famous mountain passes in Bhutan. There is a small cafeteria at the pass, where travelers can relax, enjoy a hot beverage, or have a snack while taking in the stunning scenery. One of the highlights of the pass is the 108 Druk Wangyal Khangzang Chortens, built for the well-being of all sentient beings. These chortens are a tribute to the Kings of Bhutan for their selfless service and leadership and symbolize the people’s love, appreciation, and loyalty to their monarch. (Note: The temple features some depictions that may not be suitable for young children, so please consider this before visiting.)
Afterward, continue to Punakha Dzong, also known as Pungtang Dechen Phortang Dzong, located at the confluence of the Mo Chhu and Po Chhu Rivers, which combine to form the Puna Tsang Chu, a tributary of the Brahmaputra River. The Dzong was built by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal in 1638, at a site prophesized by Guru Rinpoche 800 years earlier. According to the prophecy, a person named Namgyal would arrive at a hill shaped like an elephant. Another legend associated with the Dzong is that the architect, Zowe Palep, received a vision of the Dzong in his sleep.

City Tour
Today, the day begins early with a full-day excursion to Gangtey and Phobjikha Valley (3,000 meters / 9,845 feet, 85 km / 3 to 3.5 hours one way). Gangtey Valley is one of the most picturesque spots in Bhutan. The sight of a wide, flat valley without trees, following a climb through dense forests, creates a stunning sense of space—an incredibly rare experience in Bhutan, where most valleys are narrow and enclosed. A few kilometers beyond Gangtey Monastery, at the valley floor, lies the village of Phobjikha. This area is the winter home of the endangered black-necked cranes, which migrate from the northern arid plains to spend the colder months in the milder climate of this valley.
At an altitude of 2,900 meters, Phobjikha is located in the Wangdi Phodrang district, on the edge of the Black Mountain National Park. The valley is home to two meandering rivers—Nakay Chhu (Black Water) and Gay Chhu (White Water). According to local legend, the two rivers represent a snake and a boar. The two animals once raced, with the condition that if the snake (Nakay Chhu) won, rice would be able to grow in Phobjikha Valley. However, if the boar (Gay Chhu) won, rice could never be cultivated there. The snake lost because it had to meander through the valley, and as a result, rice has not been grown in the valley to this day.
After the visit, return to the hotel. Overnight stay at Punakha.

Gangtey and Phobjikha visit
After breakfast, drive back towards Do Chula and continue on to Paro. After lunch, proceed to visit Tamchog Lhakhang: This temple, dedicated to the 13th-century saint Thangthong Gyalpo, the famous iron bridge builder, is located about 15 km from Paro, on the road to Thimphu. To reach the temple, you must cross an iron chain bridge, one of the few remaining from the many built by Thangthong Gyalpo. Although the temple is privately owned, tourists are allowed to visit with permission. Crossing the old, swaying bridge is a unique experience, and the temple’s location on a ridge, surrounded by rocky hills, makes it a great spot for photography.
Next, visit Ta Dzong (National Museum): The name “Ta Dzong” translates to “watchtower,” and it originally served as a watchtower for the Paro Rinpung Dzong. In ancient times, similar towers were built to protect dzongs (fortresses) from potential threats. Perched high on a hill, these towers offered a strategic vantage point. Since the late 1960s, the Ta Dzong has served as the National Museum, housing an impressive collection of Bhutanese antiquities. These include ancient thangkas (exquisite scroll paintings), mural art, textiles, weapons, armor, household objects, and various natural and historical artifacts, providing a rich insight into Bhutan’s culture and history.

Punakha City Tour
After an early breakfast, drive to the base of Taktsang Monastery (Tiger’s Nest), one of Bhutan’s most famous and sacred sites. According to legend, Guru Padmasambhava arrived at this location riding a flying tigress and meditated in a cave for three months. The site gained further significance when Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal meditated here. The current structure was originally built in the 15th century, but it was destroyed by fire in 1998 and later restored. The hike to the monastery takes approximately two hours, following wide pathways created during the restoration. About one hour into the climb, you’ll reach a tea point where you can enjoy a spectacular view of the monastery and have lunch. From there, it’s another 45-minute climb to the second viewpoint, which offers the highest and most stunning view of the area.
Next, visit Kyichu Lhakhang, one of the oldest temples in Bhutan, dating back to the 7th century. It is said to have been built by a Tibetan king who ordered 108 temples to be constructed in a single night to subdue a giant ogress. Renovated in the 19th century and again in the late 1960s by the Grand Queen Mother, it is considered one of the holiest places in Bhutan. Inside the temple compound, there is an orange tree that bears fruit year-round, regardless of the season.
